About

One in four families is touched by mental illness. Many of these families feel alone. Many of these families struggle alone. No one seems to understand the difficulties that mental illness has on families and their ill loved one.

In the Family Room you will find a community to learn and share. You are invited to be a part of this community. The Family Room is based on Christian principles, but all are welcome to take part.

About Susan K. Stewart

Susan K. Stewart
Texas, United States

It’s been more than ten years since our son first showed symptoms of mental illness. At the time, we didn’t know. Everyone else seemed to have answers for us. It seemed as though everyone knew we were at fault. If only, if only. But, no one mentioned that he might have a serious brain disorder. Now, we know. And now we want to share so you don’t have to feel guilty any more.

Susan and her husband Bob are trained NAMI Family-to-Family teachers and facilitators of family support groups. Susan has served on several committees with the county Department of Mental Health, including chairing the Outreach and Education Committee, the only non-employee to serve in such a capacity. While living in California, Susan served on the NAMI-California Mental Health Services Advisory Pool. The Stewarts have received commendations for their advocacy on behalf of family members.

Susan and Bob are available to speak to groups and churches about mental illness and its affects on families.

NOTE: Links for recommended books are Amazon links. I have read all books that I recommend.

  1. Hi Susan…I’m interested in hearing more about BPD gathering…I too am in CA (northern). Thanks, Diana

  2. Hi Susan. I am a student and writing a research paper about the effect of mental illness on families. I would like to use the stages information off this website but need to be able to cite it correctly. I need to find an author and publication date. Any ideas?
