Vote Mental Health 3

This will be my last post on the elections. After all, you do need time to consider your choices.

Even in local media, the focus is on the presidential election. For those dealing with mental health issues, local elections can be more important.

Most departments of mental health are governed locally. Yes, state and federal guidelines and requirements are in place. For the most part, though, decisions about how to follow those guidelines and requirements are made on the local level.

Generally it is the county board that has the final say, especially concerning the hiring of the department director and the budget for the department. In large counties these decisions can be relegated to the consent agenda (everyone just agrees without reading the issue or discussion). Even in smaller counties, few members of the county boards really understand the impact good mental health services have on the community.

If the person running for the seat in your district is an incumbent, call the office and ask for a position paper on mental health services. Find out the voting record of the official. Does it match the position? Also, check past county meeting agendas and minutes to see how mental health is handled in meetings.

For a candidate new to the office, again, call and request a position paper. Does this candidate have a record on another board or committee? Check that record on mental health.

Your vote for local officials has a more immediate impact than your vote for president. Your local vote may have a direct effect on mental health services in your county for the next four years. Consider it carefully.

Remember, your vote may be a voice for those who can speak for themselves.

For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no rear of authority?  Do what is good, and you will praise for the same; (Rom. 13:3 NAS).
